The key is the cavalry and missile troops. Some have decent cavalry but most have limited options.Įastern factions, for the most part, do not have top tier infantry, might be good enough to hold a line but it won't be the reason you win battles. Germanic factions can actually win via fear and morale braking if you choose the right units. It's very important you charge your enemy, even in a defensive battle as a barbarian faction. All have various cavalry and skirmisher options to help assist the main line, Sparta being the least varied of the bunch.īarbarian factions' infantry mostly rely on the shock value of their charge to win the day. Sparta is mostly just spears, while some others have more pike options. I suppose the Hellenic nations might have the best spear and pike armed infantry overall. Giving you plenty of time to flank and charge with lighter troops or cavalry, which Rome has a great variety of with their auxiliary system. And each reform period makes them even tougher. Especially in their staying power in a fight.

While units like Oathsworn might be better than even the Praetorians, Rome's base infantry from the very start is better than all the others at their start. Rome probably has the best overall sword armed infantry in the entire game.
